Here are few areas of interest for "beyond the browser" Macromedia® Flash™ developers. Our goal is to help you make the most out of Macromedia Flash and get into lucrative markets that were once only open to hardcore C++, VB and Delphi programmers.

CD Splash Screens:
Whenever people think about Flash projectors, the first thing they usually consider is a CD splash screen. Not long ago, it would have cost you at least a thousand dollars for something with very basic features. They had to be written in a language that could produce stand-alone applications, which meant something like C++ or Delphi, and there weren't a lot of people that could do it.

Flash has moved into the splash screen and screensaver markets and done it successfully because... Flash makes it easy to develop the creative elements. That was always the hardest part of the job. With the proper tools, Flash designers can develop more engaging interactive content and they can do it more productively. Most people have no idea whether the splash screen for their latest CD game was created with Flash or if it's a custom application. And they don't care. As long as it's cool and it works.

Desktop Applications:
The one area that has seen almost no penetration by Flash is desktop applications. Nobody thinks of Flash as a development environment; it's just for web animation, right? Well, when Macromedia added ActionScript to Flash 5 they made it possible to use Flash for application development on the desktop.

We're not talking about using Flash for mission critical applications, but there are a lot of other potential markets out there. Just look at all the things that independent software developers are making money selling today. Screensavers are still in the lead for popularity, but if you look at sites like download.com, people are selling diet
programs, calendars, planners, e-books… the list is huge.

Most of these stand-alone applications are written using rapid development tools like VB and Delphi. The same advantages you get from building splash screens in Flash can be applied to desktop applications too. A good Flashdesigner can create a functional interface in Flash a lot faster than it can be done in VB. And if you've got a good
grasp of ActionScript, there's no reason you can't be in the stand-alone application development business.
